Exploring the West Bottoms with Nikander & Morgan Matveev

I had the pleasure of photographing Nikander and Morgan Matveev during a romantic adventure in one of Kansas City’s most unique locations—the West Bottoms. Known for its industrial charm, historic brick buildings, and urban grittiness, the West Bottoms is a dream setting for those who love blending history with modern romance.

Exploring the West Bottoms

I wanted their shoot to reflect their adventurous spirits and love for exploring new places. The West Bottoms, with its vintage aesthetic and industrial vibe, was the perfect backdrop. From towering brick warehouses to the intricate, rusted metal of old railroad tracks, every corner held something visually captivating.

Our first location was underneath a Kansas City classic bridge, where the couple’s sweet relationship contrasted beautifully against the moody, textured setting.

Capturing Moments

One of the most memorable parts of the session was watching how naturally Nikander and Morgan interacted. Whether they were walking hand-in-hand to the next location, waiting for a passing train, or hanging out on some industrial platforms, they were completely in the moment. I wanted to preserve the authenticity of their connection, capturing the laughter, the quiet moments, and the stolen glances.

The West Bottoms’ Unique Charm

The juxtaposition of old and new in the West Bottoms mirrors Nikander and Morgan’s relationship—deeply rooted yet always open to new adventures. The faded tags on the brick walls, the scattered stones, and the paint chipping off of old garage doors made this shoot feel like a slice of real life in a place where time stands still.

We wrapped up the session back by the bridge, where vintage storefronts and rusted staircases provided a cinematic backdrop. Nikander and Morgan took on the task of creating a real life rom-com with the perfect blend of romance and playfulness.

Final Thoughts

Photographing Nikander and Morgan Matveev in the West Bottoms was a beautiful experience. Their commitment and love for each other was enhanced by the gritty beauty of the location. The West Bottoms proved once again why it’s one of Kansas City’s most dynamic spots for capturing authentic, intimate moments.

For anyone looking to combine urban exploration with a romantic photoshoot, this area is a gem. And for couples like Nikander and Morgan, who want to showcase their love in a setting that reflects their adventurous spirits, I can’t recommend it enough. Stay tuned for more from this incredible session!
